Description

"The Pied Piper of Hamelin" is one of the best-known German legends and enjoys great popularity. Graham Waterhouse has set this famous medieval story to music for a recorder duet.

The combination of two flute parts and integrated spoken sequences creates a lively interplay that provides entertainment for players, speakers, and the audience. The piece is characterized by, among other things, fast runs, some challenging fingering combinations, and the required rhythmic precision. It challenges and develops the student both technically and musically, and, within the framework of a small, simple performance, also their acting talent. The need for expressive playing, the occasional use of bitonality, and above all, the ensemble playing make this piece a valuable pedagogical tool. A well-rounded trifecta for playing the recorder with enjoyment and fun.

Graham Waterhouse (born 1962) comes from a London family of musicians and has lived in Munich since 1992. He works as a freelance composer and cellist. His compositional output primarily comprises chamber music and instrumental concertos. His works "Le Charmeur de Serpents" and "Phantom Castle" for recorder have been published to date. He composed new pieces specifically for the soprano recorder method "Meine Blockflöte und ich" (My Recorder and I), published in 2010.
